The Richmond Bike Ferry is now officially up and running. It took about 60 folks across the Winooski River this morning on its maiden voyage. That water shortcut was created in an effort to get more foot traffic in the downtown Richmond area. That region has suffered some financial losses since the Richmond Bridge was shut down for repair a few weeks ago. The short ride is free, and the project was mainly funded by a United States Department of Agriculture grant. Pontoon boats provided by Local Motion take riders on the minute or so trip, one that has already once cyclist back on her routine.
"Last year we would do a full loop; it's kind of our favorite little training loop. This year we've been going out and coming back so it's nice to be able to do the full loop again," Karen Vesosky of Jericho remarked when asked about the ferry ride.
The Schedule for the Ferry is:
- Monday thru Friday
- 7-9 a.m. & 2:30-8 p.m.
- Saturday and Sunday
- 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
